Today in Second Grade

This week we are learning strategies for skip counting by ten starting from ANY number less than 100. We have learned a few strategies:

1. Find the number on the Hundred Chart. Follow the column to count on by tens.

2. Draw the number using base ten blocks. Add a ten stick for every extra ten you count.

3. Remember the pattern that when counting by tens the ones place doesn’t change. Example: 12 – 22 – 32 – 42 –> The number always ends in two.

4. Use dimes and coins to help you skip count by tens.

This week we are reviewing REPRESENTING numbers up to 100 in different ways. We can use base ten, ten frames, pictures and more.

In particular, we have learned about Canadian money, using coins as a way to show a number as an amount. Enjoy these fun videos about Canadian coins…

This week in math we are reviewing how to represent numbers (0 – 99) using base 10 blocks and tens frames.

We are also using our hundred chart to help us find numbers that are 1 more, 1 less, 10 more and 10 less.

Students are learning the different names of many 2d shapes and their attributes.

We are also learning about symmetry.

This week we are learning how to add two-digit numbers that require REGROUPING.

REGROUPING is what you may have learned as “carrying”. However, in order to understand the concept, we are not simply putting a little bitty one on top of the next column. In REGROUPING, we draw out the numbers using base ten representation and circle when our ones create a “ten”. Then we can count our tens and our ones.

This week, we are reviewing our PLACE VALUE and representing numbers greater than 100. To do this, we will be practicing with base ten blocks to visualize the value of the digits in the larger number.
