What is the 100 word challenge

The 100 word challenge is a weekly creative writing challenge. It provides students with a venue that allows their writing to be viewed by people all over the world. An authentic audience helps motivate students and make their writing more meaningful.  Each week a prompt is given for the children to write a creative piece. Those who are reluctant writers feel safe with only 100 words to write, while those more advanced writers can really extend themselves with the word restriction.

Above all – it is fun! Children feel challenged and then really rewarded when they see comments from parents, friends, and children all around the world!

4B Poetry

When reading our classroom novel, Number the Stars, we came across a chapter full of descriptive words. Prior to reading the chapter, we had a discussion about descriptive words and how they can appeal to all of our five senses. During the reading, we took notes on the descriptions, keeping in mind things we could see, taste, smell, touch, and hear. After reading, the students used their notes and a poetry outline to write these fabulous five senses poems.

These poems are now on each students blog. Please take a look at your child’s lovely poem and leave them a comment. Enjoy 🙂

2015

Happy New Year’s! I hope that everyone had a restful and relaxing break. 4B is quickly getting back into the swing of things with the start of two new units.

In Math, we have started Geometry. So far, we have learned about congruent shapes. We partnered up and made congruent shapes on a geoboard app. Overall, the students easily mastered the concept while having a great time.

In English, we are beginning our Canada unit. Students will be responsible for knowing the spelling and location of the Provinces and Territories. Some highlights within our Canada unit include, making a brochure for a Canadian Province, reading our classroom novel Jacob’s Little Giant, and writing a response to a book by a Canadian author.

I am looking forward to a great second half of the year.

Ms. Karen

4b Bloggers!

Hi 4b,

As you’ve noticed, 4b blogs are officially up and running! Everyone worked extremely hard today and wrote their first ever blog post! In grade 4, we will be using our blogs to share our work and explain our thinking. I am encouraging every student to comment on each others blog and noticed that some of you already have (kol hakavod!). Many students asked me in class if they can post pictures on their blogs – of course! Here are some instructions to make the process a little easier.

  1. Sign in.
  2.  Click + New Post.
  3. Click Add Media.
  4.  Upload File.
  5. Pick a photo from “Picture Library”
  6. Click Insert into Post.
  7. Click Publish.

Happy blogging!
